Lewisville residents will be treated to multiple fireworks displays and free concerts in the immediate area this Independence Day. With Lewisville holding its celebration on July 3 in conjunction with the Sounds of Lewisville series, Lewisville residents can crash Flower Mound’s or Castle Hills’ annual celebrations July 4.
Lewisville’s celebration, Red White and Lewisville, will be held July 3 at Wayne Ferguson Plaza in conjunction with the weekly Tuesday Sounds of Lewisville concerts. Country artist Sarah Hobbs will open at 6 p.m., an hour earlier than usual, followed by Eagles tribute band Desperado at 8 p.m. A fireworks display will follow at dusk, tentatively scheduled for 9:30 p.m.
Much of what’s special about this show is a reaction to last year’s Independence Day celebration, which was also held in conjunction with Sounds of Lewisville — the 4th fell on a Tuesday that year.
At the February City Council retreat, community relations and tourism director James Kunke went over the extreme success of that event — while an estimated 10,250 people attended the nine Sounds of Lewisville concerts last year, 5,000 of those attendees, almost half were packed into that one July 4 concert. After that success, the city decided to make sure the celebrations coincided again this year. Kunke said moving off the day of July 4 also reduces the cost of the fireworks display.
There were sightline problems with the fireworks last year — Kunke said the launch site was too low to be seen from the plaza — so this year, they will be launching a smaller display from the roof of the MCL Grand. Kunke described the show as “intimate,” saying it will feature smaller shells fired to a lower altitude.
Prime viewing areas will be the plaza, City Hall and the surrounding area. The area is expected to fill up quickly. The city will provide a free shuttle service 5 to 11 p.m. from the plaza to the north end of Lone Star Toyota of Lewisville Railroad Park and to the Lowe’s Home Improvement at I-35E and Valley Ridge Boulevard.
On Independence Day proper, Lewisville residents will find themselves between three neighboring fireworks displays in Flower Mound and Castle Hills. The gates open at Bakersfield Park for Flower Mound’s Independence Fest at 5 p.m. July 4. Country singer Pat Green will headline the show, followed up by a fireworks display around 9:50 p.m.
There will be no on-site parking at the event. Flower Mound will provide shuttles from Lakeside Industrial Business Park and Shadow Ridge Middle School running from 4:45 to 9:15 p.m., then resuming after the fireworks show. The traditional viewing location for this show is the Lewisville High School Harmon campus parking lot.
Castle Hills’ 20th annual Freedom Festival will kick off 5:30 p.m. at the Castle Hills Village Shops July 4, with a festival featuring an inflatable maze and obstacle course, 20-foot water slides, carnival games and more. Fireworks are scheduled for dusk.
