Man killed tending to flat tire on Business 121

A man is dead after being struck by a box truck while dealing with a tire at around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 1600 block of E. State Highway 121 Business.

LPD Capt. Dan Rochelle said the crash happened near the intersection of Huffines Boulevard in an area where the roadway goes over bridges for about 1/4 mile.  The victim was pulling a trailer full of trash, and police believed he was stopped to deal with a flat tire.

The impact sent the victim over the bridge to about a 20-foot drop, Rochelle said.  Radio traffic indicates the victim suffered a serious traumatic injury. An air medic from PHI transported the victim to a hospital, but he died from his injuries.

As of 2 p.m., Rochelle said the crash was still under investigation, and that the highway would be closed for some time.

Brooke Chappell said she had passed by the disabled truck and trailer on her way to The Colony earlier, and saw that it had hazard lights on, and was slightly in the right lane on the eastbound side.  She said that she didn’t see a flat tire, but that she assumed it had been a blowout because of markings on the road behind it. She did not witness the crash, but passed the crash scene on her way back to Lewisville.
