Update 11/26: According to LPD Capt. Jesse Hunter, Stegall died in the hospital Sunday afternoon Nov. 25. Child protective services have not yet determined where his and Jeffers’ three children, now orphaned, will stay in the long term.
Original story: While most of the country was preparing for a holiday feast, one Lewisville family was destroyed forever yesterday morning when Daryl Stegall, 32, shot and killed his estranged girlfriend Kishana Jeffers, 30, in front of their three children.
Stegall then turned the gun on himself, but survived. Lewisville Police Capt. Dan Rochelle said he remains in critical condition, and could still die of the wound.
Rochelle said around 11 a.m. Thanksgiving Day, Stegall attempted to enter the apartment in the 100 block of E. Round Grove Road where Jeffers and their three children, 10, 9 and 7, were located. When Jeffers would not let him in, Rochelle said Stegall kicked the door down and shot her in the head three times. He then went out to the apartment’s breezeway and shot himself in the head, but his injury has not yet proved fatal.
The children are currently staying with an uncle.
Rochelle said that, according to the victim’s family, the two were estranged. They were not married, and their relationship had been on-and-off for about 10 years. Rochelle said LPD had been called to that family’s home five times this year, including twice for family violence calls. The other three calls include one terrorist threat, a robbery and a theft.
Rochelle said police are not likely to write up a probable cause affidavit unless it becomes clear that Stegall will survive. Stegall is currently hooked up to a machine to help him breathe, and Rochelle said that even if his condition does improve, it is likely he will have to remain in the hospital for a significant amount of time.
The Lewisville Texan Journal will follow up with whatever details are available from the previous calls.
