The Charming Cat Cafe is a Lewisville spot that allows people to mingle with adoptable cats in a home-like setting. Now it also offers events, letting cat people mingle with other cat people.

Starting off with cat yoga a couple of weeks ago, the public foster home rolled out a Painting with a Twist event Wednesday, allowing attendees to do something recreational while being surrounded by fuzzy felines.

“It’s a social collaboration, a lot of people getting together because they like cats,” said Beverly Freed, founder of the cat cafe and Kitty Save. “They can talk about their cats and they can share stories.”

Kitty Save is a nonprofit rescue that provides the cats to the cafe. While The Charming Cat Cafe is a business that lets customers play with the cats for an hourly fee, it also facilitates the adoption process if somebody wishes to take home a companion.

At the painting session, attendee Dora Reinert said she can’t adopt any more cats now that she has three but likes to support the spot when she can.

“This is like a very casual animal shelter,” Reinert said.

Employee Keyven Williams said special events like these help draw more attention to the shop, even if people don’t adopt as those who are aware of the cat cafe can refer friends who are looking to adopt.

“Everything we do here helps these cats socialize,” Williams said. “They become more accustomed to people, and they become a lot friendlier and a lot more loveable.”

Painting attendee Virginia Ring, who has dogs but enjoys the company of cats, said she’s never been to The Charming Cat Cafe before but has been to Painting with a Twist classes, this being her fourth.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve actually been to the mall,” Ring said. “It’s the best of really two worlds that don’t really get to be together… my cat craving and my painting desire.”

Angela Rogers, manager at Painting with a Twist and instructor for the class, said while they hold classes off-site often, this is the first time Lewisville’s Painting with a Twist has thrown cats into the mix. She said the classes are two types of therapy in one session.

“Art is already therapy but a lot of times animals are therapeutic too,” Rogers said. “Not only are you having the art therapy, where you just get all your stress out on a paint brush, you get to pet a kitty at the same time.”

Freed said the cat cafe aims to hold two cat yoga sessions a month, one for beginners and one for those on an intermediate level. She intends for there to be monthly Painting with a Twist sessions and also hopes to incorporate painting cat ceramics at some point.

The next yoga class will be held Aug. 26 and costs $37.98. The money pays for yoga instructor Jayne Horner, who in turn will make a tax-deductible donation with a percentage of the proceeds to Kitty Save, Freed said.

The Charming Cat Cafe at Vista Ridge Mall, 2401 S. Stemmons Freeway in Lewisville, is the first of its kind in DFW and the second to come to Texas. The Charming Cat Cafe is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
