The southbound lanes of I-35E were closed this morning after an 18-wheeler crashed into the

barrier between the main and express lanes of the highway just south of Justin Road, spilling fuel and necessitating a full highway closure. First responders to the 5:50 a.m. crash reported that the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel.

Lewisville police captain Kendall Lynn said the highway was backed up all the way to Corinth Parkway by 7 a.m. Lynn said the police had to enlist the help of the sheriff’s office to close the express lane entrances north of Lake Lewisville.

Lynn said three of the four lanes were finally opened at 10:30 a.m. He said crews were still working to remove the vehicle and he expected the express lanes to remain closed until after they would be switched off under normal circumstances.

It was a rough morning for 18-wheelers in DFW — the ramp from southbound George Bush Turnpike to westbound I-20 in Grand Prairie will be closed into the evening after another one flipped over on the ramp.
